I’ve been reflecting on everything I recently explored together with my students during the Portrait Challenge — and how valuable their openness and shared thoughts were throughout the process. That honest exchange was one of the most beautiful parts of the experience.
One reason I do this work — and keep showing up for all of my workshops — is because I genuinely believe in the power of human connection through photography. Documentary Portraits or Street Portraits, especially, allow us to slow down, see each other more fully, and create something honest together. For me, it’s not just about the image — it’s about the moment of presence between two people.
That’s also why I felt called to share this here. So much of what we discussed could support others too — especially those who feel hesitant or blocked when it comes to approaching strangers for a portrait.
And let me say this, both humbly and from years of real-world experience behind the lens:
Yes, it’s challenging. That discomfort at the start? Completely normal.
It can feel awkward, even intimidating… but it does get easier — with practice, presence, and a bit of self-kindness.
That’s why I put together this short guide — to help you approach street portraits with more ease, connection, and clarity:
1. Start with self-trust.
❤️ Trust yourself — your skills, your values, and your unique way of seeing the world. Your confidence will shine through! People can feel your energy before you even speak. If you approach calmly and warmly with confidence, they are more likely to be open, too.
2. Be clear on your intention.
❤️ Before approaching someone, always start by asking myself: Why do I want to photograph this person? Sincere intention creates authentic connection.
3. Observe and connect.
❤️ Pay attention to what moves you – an expression, a detail, a quiet strength or a heartfelt relationship. Share that honestly if you choose to approach. People respond well when they fell seen valued, not just used for an image.
4. Approach with presence and care.
❤️ Meet people with genuine curiosity, kindness, and an open mind. Presence speaks louder than perfection. It’s transforms the way I connect with people.
5. Ask with warmth and confidence.
❤️ If you feel openness, approach with kindness and a smile. A simple, sincere request can go a long way.
6. Embrace the response – whatever it is.
❤️ If the answer is “no,” it’s not a failure. You’ve already grown in courage, empathy, and presence – and that’s a win in itself!!
7. Learn a few phrases in the local language (if traveling)
❤️ A few kind words in someone’s language show effort and respect – even if it’s just one sentence.
8. Show the photo (if you can)
❤️ People love to see how they look. Show them the image on your camera and offer to send it. It builds connection, and often opens the door to more photos.
9. Reflect and keep growing.
❤️ Every interaction, every attempt, every moment teaches you something. Whether you take the shot or not – you’ve moved forward.
My final thought:
❤️ Always lead with heart.
Let your honest intention speak before your camera does!
……………………………………………………
I truly hope this little guide offers you something – even if it’s just a small shift in perspective or a bit more courage next time you’re out with your camera.
If you ever feel unsure or blocked, know that you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. But every time you choose to lean in – even just a little – you grow. In presence. In empathy. In trust.
Let these words remind you:
You are capable.
Your way of seeing the world matters.
And connection, more than perfection, is what makes your portraits powerful.
